WEDDING.
BUICK—HUGHES.
A very pretty wedding was celebrated in the local Presbyterian Church yesterday afternoon by the Rev. J. M. Thomson, M.A. The contracting parties were Mr John Lambert Buick, third cf the late James Buick, of Tiakitahuna, and a nephew of David Buick, Esq., M.P., of Palmerston North, and Miss Ethel May, third daughter of Mr and Mrs G. Hughes, old and respected settlers of this district. The bridal party were motored to the church. The bride, who was accompanied and “given away’’ by her father, was charmingly attired in white silk, trimmed with silk lace and fringe, skirt draped with silk allover lace, train embroidered with lover’s knots. The bride wore the usual wreath and veil, and carried a white bouquet of camelias and pearl blossoms. The bridesmaids were the Misses Ivy and Pearl Hughes, sisters of the bride, who wore white embroidered muslin dresses and white lace hats trimmed with pink roses and carried bouquets 01 pink azalias and ferns. They alsu .me gold broocues, gifts ol the bridegroom. Mr A. Buick, brother ot bridegroom, officiated as best man, and Mr G. Hughes, brother of the bride, as groomsman. As the party left the church they were liberally sprinkled with rice and confetti. A reception was subsequently held at the residence of the bride’s parents, when the usual roasts were duly honoured. Mr and Mrs Buick left by motor car for Napier, where the honeymoon is to be spent, after which they will take up their residence at Longburn. The bride’.- travelling dress was a blue cloth costume, trimmed with black silk braid, black hat with ostrich plumes. The bride’s mother was attired in a grey costume, trimmed with black silk braid and black hat with plumes. Mrs Edwards, sister of the bridegroom (Palmerston N.), blue linen costume, white hat trimmed with black allover lace. Mrs Blanche (Palmerston N.), grey silk, black velvet hat trimmed with white lace and plumes. Mrs Seddon (Palmerston N.), champagne coloured silk with lace overdress, black hat with white ostrich feathers. Miss Hughes, grey striped silk embroidered with blue, grey hat. Owing to indisposition, the bridegroom’s mother was not present. The presents received bear testimony to the popularity of the couple. The bride’s present to the bridegroom was a set of silver and ebony brushes, and the bridegroom’s gift to the bride was a gold watch and chain and gold bangle. Among the numerous presents were cheques from the bride’s father and Mr T. Hughes, table silver and cutlery from the bride’s mother and dinner service from the bridegroom’s mother. Other presents were in great variety.
In connection with the above wedding, it is worthy of note that the bride’s parents were among the first couples whose weddings were celebrated in the Foxton Presbyterian Church —the first church erected in F'oxtou, The ceremony took place iu 1877, and was performed by the late Rev. Jas. Duncan. In commemoration of the event, Mr and Mrs Hughes were presented by the minister with a Bible, which remains a treasured heirloom.
