INQUEST.
An inquest on the body of David Lynn, found washed up at Hartley’s bend yesterday, was held before the District Coroner, Mr Alf. Fraser, last night, when the following evidence was taken :
Robert Rodger, master of the s.s. Gertie deposed having reported to the police on August 21st, that David Dynn was missing from the ship, which was then lying alongside the Foxton wharf. He had joined the ship two days previously. Witness did not again see him until that morning when he had seen his body on the bank of the river at Hartley’s bend. He was present when the police took charge of the body. He identified it by the clothes and build.
Robert James Tyler, cook of the s.s. Gertie, stated that he was steward when the deceased was cook. He last saw deceased alive on the night of August 20th at about midnight, when he called out to witness fora drink of water. Deceased drank the water and went back to bed. That was the last he saw of him.
Constable Sweeney gave evidence to the effect that acting on information received he had proceeded to Hartley’s bend, where the body was taken charge of and conveyed to the morgue.
The Coroner returned a verdict that the deceased, David Lynn, came to his death by drowning in the Manawatu River on August gist, 1912.
