STRIKERS COMMANDEER MOTOR FIRE ENGINE.
Waihi, Sept. 24
The Borough Council, at a special meeting last night, dealt with the action of several members of the Brigade in commandeering the brigade motor to take part in the strike procession. Alter discussion it was decided that the Fire Council meet the Brigade today and obtain an explanation and an apology. In the course of the discussion, Cr Corringham said he had asked one of the Brigade what he would do it an enginedriver’s house was on fire, and the brigadesman told him he would fill the hose with kerosene.
The Brigade had been notified not to take the car out except in cases of alarm, but the notice was treated with contempt. BATTERIES AT WORK. AN ALLEGED ASSAULT. Waihi, Sept. 25. The running of fifty of the 200 stampers at the Waihi Company’s Waikino battery, after being idle for over four months, started this morning, crushing quartz. An alleged assault by the arbitrationist Heath on a woman, Margaret Sell, is being heard today. The prosecuting police explained the case was an echo of the recent strike cases. It presented peculiar factors, and a large number of witnesses would be called. The complaint was that Heath, in passing through the crowd, had jostled plaintiff, and struck her severly with his elbow, inflicting a bruise on her breast.
