VALEDICTORY.

A valedictory social aud presentation was tendered to the Thompson tamily in Hammond’s Hall, Oroua Downs, last night, by I the settlers. Mr Thompson, who | recently disposed of his farm to Mr Burling, of Waikauae, gives up possession this week. The gathering was fully representative, aud every available seat occupied, j Mr Bethune occupied the chair. Mr Witton, in a few well chosen remarks, presented Mr Thompson, on behalf of the settlers and school ■ committee, with a handsome travelling rug. He referred to Mr Thompson as a sterling settler aud a good neighbour, and said they regretted his departure from the district. He had taken a keen interest in educational matters, and his loss would be severely felt on the directorate of the dairy .company. He wished Mr and Mrs Thompson and tamily Godspeed and many years ot happiness and prosperity wherever their future might he. The Rev Mr Coatsworth made a presentation to Miss Thompson of a silverbacked brush and mirror, and other silver toilet requisites, suitably engraved, from the Sunday school teachers and scholars, aud trom the combined Anglican and Methodist church people. He pointed out that Miss Thompson had officiated as superintendent of tne Sunday school and organist for the church services. Her loss would be keenly felt in these connections. Mr Thompson feelingly • responded on behalf of himself and tamily. He would always remember with kindly feelings the good friends he was leaving behind. Tne company sang “For they are jolly good fellows” with gusto, and concluded with three ringing cheers for the guests. The following ladies and gentlemen contributed a musical programme : —Mrs Bethune, Miss Jenks, Messrs Small, Buglass, Bethune, Horubiow aud Christensen. The last named contributed a very cleverly-executed solo with a gum leaf. The tone was almost indistinguishable from that produced by a violin, aud was a remarkably clever aud-extraordiuary performance. He was accompanied by a piano aud cornet. Supper was provided by the ladies, and a very enjoyable evening was brought to a close with the singing ot Auld Dang byue.
