MOTOR CAR ACCIDENT.
YOUNG WOMAN KILLED. Christchurch, July 7. A motor-car fatality occurred about 2.30 o’clock yesterday afternoon at Foster’s cutting, between Scargill and Ethelton, on the Christchurch-Cheviot load, as the result of which Miss Hughes, about 19 years ot age, daughter of Mr F. W. Hughes, of Port Robinsou, lest her life. Yesterday morning John Puchel, farmer, of Domett, left town in a motor-car, which he was driving, for Domett. With him was Miss Hughes, his sister-in-law, and his three-year-old daughter. When going up Foster’s cutting on the slow speed, and when three or four chains up the hill, the car suddenly stopped and commenced to go backwards. Mr Putchelput on the foot brake, but finding that it was not holding sufficient, he tried to work the hand brake. Before he could do so the car backed into the very sleep bank and capsized completely, all four wheels in the air, and the occupants being pinned beneath. Alter considerable struggling, Mr Puchel got free from the car but before he got free he heard Miss Hughes give three- laint moans. By means of a jack he got the car up aud found Miss Hughes dead.
After two unsuccessful attempts to get medical aid by telephone Mr Pucbel got to Waikari this morning and was brought to town by motor-car. His left arm was dislocated.
On Friday, when coming to town, the cat stopped dead on a flat road and n - had it attended to when he reached town ; but on the way out yesterday it slopped after going over the Waipari bridge, on some loose shingle, and some difficulty was experienced in getting it restarted. v
