CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor.)

• Sir, —In Saturday’s issue you stated in an article that you did not think the Council had much of a chance of carrying a loan for a water supply until the general rate was reduced. I would like to know whether Councillors take any interest or have any say in drawing up the estimates upon which the rate is struck. It appears to me, sir, that too much is allowed to slip through at Council meetings without consideration, and too much power or authority is vested in one, or at the most, two men’s bauds, I admit it is the willing horse that does the most work, but every Councillor, if he is faithful to his trust, should be a willing worker. How many of the nine Councillors could tell us how the basis for the general rate was arrived at, and whether we are getting value for the increased rates. If each Councillor would give more conscientious consideration to his duty other than lor two hours per mouth there would soon be au improvement in our civic administration. I am net complaining of the qualifications of thegentlemen whom we elected to act as our trustees, but can they say they give that careful consideration to all matters submitted io them that they should ? What has become of their public works committee, nuance committee, library committee, hall committee ? Is it not a fact, sir, that they have thrown all this responsibility on the shoulders of the Town Clerk ? Wasn’t it the wish of the people when they returned them to office that they would discharge their duties faithfully, and didn’t each of them give their word that they would i I do hope that they will put their shoulders to the wheel and stir things up a bit. They are all good men, but I do not think they are doing their best. Thanking you in anticipation,—l am, etc., Ratepayer.
