The men on shore will complete their signing-off to-morrow morning. A number signed off to-day, but others, under the impression that the Company must take them back to London (the Star of Canada’s port of departure), declined to sign off. It is expected that this difficulty will be overcome to-morrow.
Captain Taylor, of the London Salvage Association, arrives in the morning, and it is understood that the process ol abandonment will be then formally completed.
A preliminary enquiry into the stranding was opened in camera by the Collector of Customs this morning, and the evidence of Captain Hart was taken. It is expected that the evidence of the officers will be completed tomorrow, and then the evidence will he forwarded to Wellington, the magisterial enquiry being held later.
