A GORY BATTLE.

POLICE STOP THE FIGHT

Flynn was confident he would be the new champion.

Johnson offered to bet ten thousand against four ■ .ousand on himself.

Flynn was expected to make a rushing fight. Ed. Smith, the Chicago sport writer, was the referee. San Francisco, July 4.

Johnson beat Flynn in the world’s championship fight at Las Vegas, New Mexico. The police stopped the fight in the ninth round because Flyun was butting.

Flynn was badly whipped. In the first round Flynn started rushing, but Johnson easily avoided him. The champion cut a deep gash under his opponent’s left eye, and shook Flyun with left and right hooks. In the second round Johnson toyed with Flynn, who bled at the mouth.

In the third round Flynn rushed and hooked Johnson on the mouth with a right and left, bringing blood, but Flynu was streaming as he went to his corner.

Flynn was badly punished in the next three rounds. He tried to reach Johnson’s stomach, but Johnson laughed at his efforts, and dazed the crowd with his speed.

Flynn started butting in the sixth round, and was warned. Johnson dazed his opponent with a volley of straight lefts and rights to the face, and then stopped, apparently to prolong the fight. In the seventh round Flynn failed to laud a blow, but Johnson landed a dozen hard punches, and made the blood tairly gush as he rained in the blows. In the eighth round Flynn started butting again, and was warned. He was again unable to land a blow.

In the ninth round Johnson held Flynn at arm's length in an attempt to prevent his butting. Finally Flynn got close to him, jumped a foot in the air, and landed the top of his head against Johnson’s jaw. The police thereupon stopped the fight, and Johnson was given the decision. The crowd was wrathful, and hooted Flynn.
