CRICKET.
Another instance of history repeating itself has been given in the match Australia v. Surrey, just completed. During the 1909 tour the Australians in their first match with the county, suffered defeat by a very narrow margin, the dinerence on that occasion was five runs, whilst in the game finished on Wednesday, Surrey again snatched a win by a small margin, Australia failing to reach the home team’s total by 21 runs only. The scores were : Surrey 190 and 247 ; Australia 109 and 307. In 1909 the grand totals were : Surrey 19 1 and IS7 ; Australia 157 and 207. A pleasing feature of the latest game was the excellent batting uf the young Victorian, Smith, who scored a century. This player was the last man selected for the tour of England, and resulted iu the selectors being subjected to a good deal of criticism, a number of other players being named as Smith’s superiors. His score this week justifies the good opinions of him on the part of the three gentlemen entrusted with the selecting of Australia’s team.
