SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary meeting of the local school committee was be! ‘ r n Thursday night. Present; Messrs Hornblow (chairman), G. Bather (secretary), Betty, Franklaud, Hunt and Hussey. Correspondence was read from the Education Board in respect to granth •; assistr.-..- conveying ... ss the

river and enclosing forms re same. —Forms have been filled in and returned to the Board. Other formal correspondence was read and dealt with.

The head teacher’s report was read and received. It stated that the average attendances for the past four weeks were: 311.4, 304.9, 295.1, 3x5.2. The average for the whole period was 306.6 out of an average roll number of 328. The present roll number is 340, One or two leaks in the roof required attention and a load of limestone was required to repair the front path. The visiting committee was authorised to attend to repairs, etc.

The action of the chairman in authorising the purchase of a new drum and hedge plants was endorsed.

The visitor's report, presented by Mr F'raukland, was received. The question of levelling portion of the playground, as suggested some time ago by the special committee set up for that purpose, was again discussed. It was decided to make enquiries re soil to fill depressions and to deal definitely with this matter at next meeting.

The Chief Inspector’s report on his visit on May 28th, was read. It stated, inter alia that the organisation was well conceived and efficient in its adoption of means to needs; the members of the staff devote themselves to their, work with unmistakable zeal, and the lessons in the classes were given and received in an admirable spirit ; a good tone pervades the school; physical instruction is a commendable feature of the school work and the cadets are a smart and active set of boys ; the school garden, were favourably commented upon ; the pupil teachers do their work faithfully as students ; the class rooms are clean and tidy and made attractive by natural history specimens; the teachers take much interest in the school library ; the committee have in hand the levelling of the playground. When this is done and the baths erected the school environment will be everything that is desirable.

Several accounts were passed for payment and Messrs Hornblow and Henderson appointed visitors for the month.
