THE MAORI AND DEFENCE.
Anti-militarism does not seem to be in much favour with members of the Maori race. Recently the Hon. A. M. Myers (Minister for Defence) received a letter from Mr J. M'Gurther, secretary of the Northern Division of the Young Maori Party, covering the following resolution passed at a conference ol the party held iu April;— “ That this conference expiesses its pleasure that there have been no cases of Maoris objecting to the discharge of their duties, as citizens, under the Defence Act.”
The Minister has, replied as under: —■“ I am in receipt of yours of June 7, informing me that, at a. nual meeting of the Young Maori Party, held iu April last, a resolution was passed expressing pleasure that there had been no cases oiMaoris objecting to discharge their duties as citizens under the Defence Act. The cordial relations existing between the Maori and the pakeha in this country have been a matter of special comment on many occasions, and it is gratifying to know that if the Government is ever called upon to defend these shores, it can be assured of the loyal and whole-hearted co-opera-tion of the Maoiri race.”
