A committee meeting of the local literary and debating society will be held at 7.30 this evening* instead ot the general meeting. The straw, which provided bedding at the mounted camp, was piled in heaps and fired this morning. The straw was offered to the local racing club, but was refused, Three members of the now defuct Foxtou Football Club, Reid, Rore and Haeaua. will don the green jersey for Shannon in their match against Tevin-Wanderers at Shannon on Saturday.

It is reported in Berne, Switzerland, that had Mr W. T. Stead survived the Titanic disaster, he would have been the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize (,£8000') this year. It is rumoured that next year’s mounted camp will include three regiments. If this is correct the Foxton racecourse will be too small, and a larger parade ground will be selected, possibly at Oringi (between Woodville and Danuevirke) or the Waimarino Plains (Main Trunk I,ine). Owing to the soaking of the tents at the encampment by the recent heavy rains, it has been decided to leave them standing until the canvas is dry. Given fine weather to-day the tents will be down and packed to-morrow. Quartermaster Jickell is in charge of the now deserted canvas town.

A curious freak, in the form of a five-legged, full-grown sheep has been slaughtered at the Waiugawa Ireezing works. The two fore limbs on one side are perfectly developed, the scopula blades being osified, and the rest of the bones forming two complete legs. The Government has appointed the following to act as a Royal Commission on education : Messrs Mark Cohen and W. Davidson, Dunedin ; J. R. Kirk, Gisborne ; F. Pirani, Feilding; Hugh Poland, M.P., Paeroa ; John C. Thompson, M.P., Riverton ; Thos. H. Wells, Auckland.

An Oamaru Mail reporter asked Mr James Allen whettier he thought there would be another election this year. A meet of the Manawatu Hunt Club will be held at Moutoa on Saturday atteruoou. The throw off will be at 2.30 o’clock from Mr Carter’s and the kill at Mr Smith’s. A good course has been selected and in order to induce a large number to follow the hounds all the jumps have been made easy. Spectators will be able to get a splendid view of the hunt from the Moutoa road.

Recently, at Martiuborough, a peculiar mishap, though simple in its nature, might have been attended with serious results. Mrs Harper was eating an apple when a piece lodged itself securely in the windpipe. All manner of methods were resorted to try and dislodge it, but they failed. Dr. Webb was called in and uusuccessfuly tried, and fearing an operation sent lora brother medico. In the meantime, hot fomentations had been used, aud luckily this had the effect of removing the piece of apple.

There is now at the Dresden Piano Depot in Wellington a gramophone room with a good selection of instruments aud many musical records. Mr M. J. Brookes, ihe North Island manager of that establishment, has asked us to tell uur readers that visitors Irom the provinces will always be welcome. There will 'be placed c . the gramophone any selections they desire to hear. An operator :s always in attendance. It will not be suggested that purchases should be made. “The Dresden” is simply desirous of showing spontaneous attention to its friends.
