The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, May 30, 1912. NOTES AND COMMENTS.

Thk township was ringing with cheers this morning as the territorials bade adieu to their comrades travelling in opposite directions. A marked feature of the camp was the splendid spirit of comradeship which existed among the young fellows and their officers. We are sure, if the Eoxtou camp is a sample of other training camps throughout the Dominion, that parents need have no fear of immoral contaminating influences on their boys. On the whole the moral lone of the camp has been good. The sale of alcoholic liquor at training camps has been barred, we hope for all time, and although bars were in close proximity to the local camp we did not see one young man under the influence of liquor. One does not expect to see Sabbath school conduct at these camps and a little exuberance of spirits is excusable. The officers and older lads check any excess. As the instruction camps settle in their bearings, an even better tone will be maintained. Anti-militarists and leather-lunged red socialists and extreme labour agitators—few and noisy as they are —have not a leg to stand on in their frothy criticism of and opposition to compulsory military training. The object behind the training scheme is not to vaunt imperialistic jingoism, but to make for • the goal of universal peace.
