The weather was very mild yesterday, and warm rain fell last night. King George has commanded that the Society of Knights Bachelor be henceforth called the Imperial Society of Knights. Some very fine samples of th e confectioner’s art, in the shape o* three wedding cakes, are on exhibition in Mr M. Perreau’s shop window.

The Mayor of Taihape maintains that so great is the progress of that town, that in 36 years, owing to the receipts from municipal enterprises, Taihape will be rate free.

A writ, claiming damages, has been filed by F. F. A, Gordon, poultry expert, against the New Zealand Times for alleged libel in regard to the efficacy of his system. The case will be heard in Wellington.

Bishop Green, in an address to the Ballarat Anglican Synod, condemned Church raffles. He said that weak men and weak communities, to gain a few pounds, without serious cost to themselves, had not scrupled to appeal to one of the most lamentable propensities in the Australian character, the love of gambling.

The death of Mr T. C. Williams, a resident of Wellington for many years, recalls a stirring incident of the trouble between Fuglaud and America in the early part of the century, says the Post. The lather of Mr T. C. Williams, the Rev H. Williams, was at one time an officer in the Royal Navy, and held the rank of lieutenant on H.M.S. Shannon, under Captain Broke, when she challenged and defeated the American frigate Chesapeake, Captain Fawrence, on Ist June, ISI3, i Q Boston Bay. The Chesapeake struck about fifteen minutes after the fight began, and she was towed to Halifax by the British ship. Bast Friday afternoon the pupils of the local State school assembled in the quadrangle to bid farewell to Mr Wilson, who has held the position of fourth assistant during the past year. The head-teacher, on behalf of the pupils and the teaching staff, expressed regret at the departure of Mr Wilson, who had always taken a great interest in his work and had become very popular with the pupils. Owing to short notice, there had been insufficient time to obtain a parting gilt, but a handsome travelling rug is being obtained, and will be forwarded to Mr Wilson. Mr Wilson feelingly responded, thanking the teachers and the pupils lor their handsome gift, and lor their hearty expressions ol goodwill. He would always remember with pleasure his stay in Foxtou.

The late Wm. T. Stead, whose life had a tragic ending on the Titanic, wrote the preface to the fifth edition of Mr I*'. W. Frankland’s “Thoughts on Ultimate Problems,” a copy ol which we desire to acknowledge from the author —our respected townsman. Mr Stead pays a graceful tribute to the author and confesses his own inability to thoroughly grasp such abstruse problems with which Mr F'rankland’s giant intellect has for so many years delighted to revel. Mr Stead writes : “ ‘Thoughts on Ultimate Problems’ is an excessively condensed statement of the conclusions ot a profound thinker, couched in metaphysical and mathematical phraseology which probably only two members of Parliament could understand. Mr Balfour could, and that is possibly one reason why he has been superseded by Mr Bonar Uaw. Uord Haldane could, and that is possibly one reason why he has never been I,ord Chancellor. Excepting these two, I know none of our legislators who could grapple with Mr F'ranklaud’s ‘Thoughts.’ ”

Mr Hillary iuforms us that weasles have been raiding his fowl yard ot late, and he has lost a number of valuable pullets. All Saints’ Church vestry will meet at the residence of Mr F. W. Fraukland, this evening at S o’clock.

A sharp shock of earthquake was experienced in the Auckland and Taranaki districts on Sunday evening.

For the lack of one of two whole-hearted enthusiasts, the bottom has completely fallen out of football in Foxtou this season.

A Wairarapa farmer has this year secured a return of per head from his cows, and £3 per head from his pigs. This is a record which will require beating. A special meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board will be held ai Palmerston, on Tuesday next, at 1.45 p.m., to discuss what further action will be taken in connection with the wharf.

There was a full house at the municipal pictures last night and the films were highly appreciated. Among the films shown, that depicting cotton spinning had been previously screened locally. The annual installation ceremony in connection with the" local Masonic Bodge takes place tomorrow night, after which the local brethren will entertain visiting brethren and lady friends at a social.

The officers of the mounted camp entertained the stewards 01 the local Racing Club at diuuer at the camp last week. The stewards will give a return dinner to the officers at Perreau’s rooms to-night, at 6.30 o’clock. There was a large attendance at the municipal picture entertainment on Saturday night. Except for a slight hitch with the first picture screened, which, by the way, showed the effect of wear, the programme was much appreciated.

Mr “Trooper” Robinson, who has been confined to his bed with rheumatism since Faster Monday, is still in a very weak condition. This Case is a sequel to the South African campaign. The Borough Council is extending the gas mains down the Fady’s Mile, and the residents in the locality are having the gas installed in their homes. It is anticipated that this month’s output ot gas will constitute a record. The Feildiug Star says if the Government had placed several women upon the Commission appointed to inquire into the cost ot living, then we might have had a report worth while. As it is, what can come of it within a month ?

Last night about 20 members of the local Good Templar Lodge paid a visit to Shannon for the purpose of attending the meeting oi the Shannon branch ol the Order. The visitors spent a very enjoyable time, and arrived home just alter midnight. It is slated that Mr Massey’s expenses in connection with his unsuccessful case against the New Zealand Times, both here and before the Privy Council, will run into nearly ,£I,OOO. Law is expensive. The cause of the action was a cartoon which Mr Massey held reflected upon himself.

The annual conference of the Education School Committees’ Association will consider the following proposal; “ That the Minister of Education be recommended to secure and supply each Education Board in the Dominion with au up-to-date kinematograph machine suitable for use in approved schools; also to secure specially selected Aims of industrial and general scenes and other useful educational subjects.”

It is officially stated that the total amount owing by the local bodies in the Dominion, apart from loans from the Government, is nearly £17,000.000, and the interest paid, apart tromany sinking funds, averages £4 ns yd per cent.
