The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, May 28, 1912. NOTES AND COMMENTS.

At a special meetiug of the Borough Couucil last week the Council decided to increase tlic salary of us Uall caretaker auu uxovdug picture operator. The increase is equivalent to a weekly wage of £4. The duties of the caretaker - operator may warrant the increase. Anyhow, a Danuevirke firm, so the Mayor informed the Council, had offered the Council’s operator ,£4 per week, and if the Council desired to retain his services they would have to grant an increase—which they did without any reference to comparative services. No doubt the Couucil were satisfied that the increase was justified. But the Council went further than this—they gave the caretaker-operator a guarantee of a year’s employment. This, to our mind, was quite unnecessary in view of the fact that a capable manager is employed and such guarantee is calculated to create confusion and possibly something more serious. Further, we think the Council should see to it that an assistant operator is trained in case of emergency.
