CHINESE GAMING HOUSE.

RAID IN AUCKLAND

Auckland, May 13

Two sergeants and eleven constables raided a Chinese shop in Wakefield street at eight o’clock last night and arrested thirty-eight Chinese on a charge ot being found in a gaming house. Five tables in use in a room were devoted to fan tan, pakapoo, dice, cards and dominoes, and on four money was found. Twenty of the Chinese arrested were professed Christians and had been to church.

Ting Hung was charged with being the keeper of the house and two others with assisting him. The police, it is staled, intend to produce evidence to show that the house was run on rather novel lines by a syndicate. For those w,ho played, substantial meals were provided free ; in fact so good was the lare that the house became to be known as the “Northern Club.” The players had to pay a certain amount, it is alleged, for the privilege of playing, and from the winnings in each game from five to ten per cent, went to the “house.” “We have evidence,” said Sub-Inspector Hendry, “to show that in this way frequently went to the house in one day.” The sum of £1 4s was found in the syndicate commission box last evening, and was taken possession of by the police.
