THE HALL AND SKATING.

At last night’s Council meeting Cr Richmond ask.'’ why it was that people desirous of hiring the Hall could not get it on skating nights. He understood that it was the intention of the Council that skating should give way to anything else. He had been inmrmed that the Trans-Octanic Company had been refused the Hall on April 9th, 011 the ground that it was required tor skating. He believed that Mr Robertsen, the member for the district had been refused the Hall on the same grounds. If the Hall couldn’t be got when it was required it would mean that before loug another building would be erected.

Mr Fraser said that the statement in regard to the Transoceanic Company was absolutely false as they had made no application for the hall. In reference to Mr Robertson’s application, Mr Fraser said that during the week previous to the date required an application was made for the Friday night, and Mr Robertson’s representative was informed that that night had been booked by the Taimii iMiustrels, but that he could have any other night in the week if he booked the date early enough. On the following Monday he came and wanted the Thursday night and as skating was advertised for that night he refused to let it. He pointed out that for a political meeting the charge was 30s. and for skating they would receive upwards of £ 2, The question was whether the Council was out to make money or was running the hall as a philanthropic institution. Cr Speirs said he was in the Council Office when the application for the hall for Mr Robertson was made, and at the time it was advertised for skating for the night in question. The matter was allowed to drop without any resolution being passed.
