SATURDAY’S RESULTS

ROVERS 19 v. FOXTON 8. LEVIN-W., 14 v. HUI MAI 0
ROVERS (19) v. FOXTON (8)
On the racecourse on Saturday the local team played their second match in this year’s championship competition, and were . again badly beaten. The cause of their downfall was again want of condition, the first spell being very evenly contested and the local players also held their own daring the first part of the second spell, but after that condition told, and the Rovers had all the best of it. Foxtou certainly possesses the material lor a really good team, and all that is required is that the players should get into form and practice together. Unless they do this their chances ol being in the running for the Horowheuua Union’s Championship Shield are very remote indeed. By their win on Saturday the Shannon players’ unbroken record —of defeats —was spoiled, this victory being the first gained by Shannon for some three seasons.
The Shannon team gives promise ol developing into a very strong side, and will be a force to be reckoned with iu the deciding of this year’s championship.
Foxtou drew first blood on Saturday, Reid scoring about half way through the first spell. Haeaua’s attempt at goal was a poor one. This reverse put Shannon on their mettle, and play was almost immediately transferred to Foxton’s territory, where from a scrum near the line the Shannon players lorced their way over, Peri touching down. Seymour added the major points. Just at the end of the spell trom a loose rush Cobbler got possession and scored. Seymour tailed with the kick and the spell ended with the score 8 to 3 iu Shannon’s favour.
From the opening of the second half Foxtou attached and subsequently irom a line out Cook got possession and punted, Martin following fast picked up and scored. Haeana kicked a goal, thus making the score eight all. Now Shannon took possession and betore the end of the game added three more tries, one being scored by Kau Perewhiti and the other two by Healey. One was converted, and the game ended in a win for Shannon by 19 points to 8. Mr J. Desmond refereed.
DKVIN-WANDFRFIRS (14) v HUI MAI (o).
There was a good attendance of the public ai the above match. Hui Mai were last season’s runners-up, and special interest attached to the game. The visitors were not fully represented. Hui Mai kicked off, aud play ruled fairly even in the opening stages. I,cVin, however, gradually assumed the aggressive, and good play was shown by Thurston aud Tim Close. Some tight pla} took place on the Hui Mai line, but Ned Bevau got the ball frdm the scrum and kicked up field. Tester took a mark well in the visitors’ twenty-live aud Nepia Winiata had a shot at goal which proved successful. Play remained tairly even during the remainder of the spell, half-time arriving with Devin leading by 3 points to nil. In the second hall Close scored a try for Devin, aud Hall added another, which Nepia Winiata converted. Devin won by 14 points to nil.
Ou Saturday next Foxtou will meet Tainui at Devin. All local players are requested to roll up at Mr Ball’s billiard room on Thursday evening next, at 8 o’clock, for the purpose of discussing matters in connection with the Club, and, if possible, indulging in some practice. The team to represent the Club against Tainui will also be selected that evening.
