PRESENTATION TO MR FIELD.

A fuuctiou of cousiderable interest took place at the Druids’ Hall, Otaki, on Wednesday afternoon, when a large number ol supporters and friends of Mr'W. H. Field, ex-M.P. for Otaki, assembled lor the purpose of entertaining him, and making him a suitable presetnatiou m recognition ol the sei vices he had rendered the district. His supporters all along the coast had worked well, ana subsetiptions came m freely irom Devin, Otaki and Waikanae, and m consequence Mr Field was presented with a purse containing nearly one hundred pouuus. Mr Heroert Freeman, in making the presentation, said Mr Field had not only laboured long, but well and faithfully. He stated mat 'his was a slight recognition of the esteem in which Mr Field was held throughout the electorate. His many services had been much appreciated, and it was recognised generally that his loss of membership lor the district had been a very severe blow to many ot them. He felt that his retirement would not be a permanent one. (Cheers). Mr B. R. Gardener said that it afforded him very much pleasure to be present that day. No one knew uetter than he did the very valuable services which Mr Field had rendered not only to Devin but to the district generally. It was usual to make a preseutatiou when a man was retiring from olhce, but he trusted that Mr Field's retirement would only be a very temporary oue, lie felt sure that his old supporters m luture would rally rouua him aud assist him all iu tneir power. The last election had taught them many lessons, aud the little delects which were uot attended to at that time could be easily remedied in tbe future. With regard to the sitting member, Mr Gardener said that it was the duty of the public generally to bury their personal leeiiugs aud to assist him aud to make use ot his services in every possible way, (Applause). Mr Field, who was cormally greeted, on behall of his wife aud himself, heai city thanked his friends for their very substantial present.
