THE SOUTH POLE.
Christchurch, April 8,
Mr Kinsey, agent lor Captain Scott’s expedition, has received a letter Irom Captain Scott showing that he was aware of Captain Amundsen’s rivalry, but did not intend to alter his plans to meet it. The letter is dated October 28, on the eve of the departure of the southern party and says : —“We shall leave with high hopes of accomplishing our object, despite the reverses of last season, but there is a chance that we shall not catch the ship, and I have decided to arrange fur her return in 1913. I am fully alive to the complication of the situation by Amundsen, but as any attempt to a race might be fatal to our chance of getting to the Pole at all, I decided long ago to do exactly as I should have done if Amundsen was not here. If he gets to the Pole he is bound to do it rapidly with the dogs, and one foresees that success will justify him. Anyhow he is taking a big risk. He deserves luck if he gets through. Meanwhile we are doing our best to carry out our plans.
