TWO-UP ON THE TRAIN.
■ ♦ SUBSTANTIAL FINKS INFLICTED.
Daniel Muir and A. Johnson appeared at the Palmerston North S.M. Court yesterday, in answer to a charge of gambling in a train between Palmerston North and Shannon.
Sub-Inspector Norwood stated that the guard had seen four men playing two-up in the train, and on asking for their names had beeu given fictitious names. They had beeu warned by the guard, and had refused to cease playing. Johnston’s real name was Archibald Stewart, but as a consequence of the fictitious names the police had had great difficulty in traciug them. Defendants pleaded guilty. His Worship stated that they were liable to a fine of ,£lO. A fine of with costs 13s 6d, was inflicted in each case, a week being allowed in which to pay.
