CORRESPONDENCE

(To the .Editor.)

Sir, —I see “Ratepayer” draws attention to a sewer that is polluting the river, and causing a nuisance. I would like to draw your attention to a greater nuisance and danger to the public health, namely that watercourse that runs through the centre of the town, that was origingally cut to divert the then existing small watercourses, and give them an outlet to the river. It is now called the Awahou drain, but should be called the Awahou filth sewer. Sir, if the weather should keep dry for a few days, the stench from it will be unbearable, as several houses empty their sewage into it, and it is time the same was stopped, before it causes an outbreak ol fever. There is just another thing I would like to call attention to : eighteen mouths ago, when the crown was put on Main street, most of the heavy fibre drays used to go via Johnston street, or kept on their proper side going along Main street, but since the crown of the street has been tarred, those fibre drays keep on the centre all the time, which will destroy the good work done, and I maintain they should be taxed the same as carriers, as they do more damage to the roads. Thanking you in anticipation,—l am, etc., Another Ratepayer.
