BOWLING

Yesterday afternoon the challenge match between Shannon and the local holders of the Manawatu Ferns should have been played, but at ii o’clock a telephone message was received from Shannon to the effect that they could not get a team to make the trip. Skip. Woods, on learning that the Shannon rink was not coming over, rounded up his team and took the places of the visitors. The game was a very interesting one. The holders commenced well, and when the adjournment was made for atternoon tea it looked any odds that the trophies would remain with them, the score then being 14 to 3, and only nine more heads to play. The refreshments, however, put fresh life into the challengers, and they gradually overhauled their opponents, and after the sixteenth head, had reduced their lead to five— 15-10. The next head gave Skip. Wood’s team another four, as also did the eighteenth, and they then led by 18 to 15. In the next two heads the leaders again came out on top, and at the twenty-first the holders were confronted with a very stiff proposition of making six to tie. This hurdle was altogether too much for them, and although they played up well they finished up the game four behind the challengers : challengers. HOLDERS. Barber Spring Speirs Whibley Petrie Clemett Woods (s) 21. Rimmer (s) 17. During the afternoon, tea was dispensed by the ladies, and was much appreciated by those present.

There was a large attendance of ladies at the green yesterday atternoon, and despite the fact that an important and interesting bowling match was beiug played, they outnumbered the sterner sex considerably. Great interest is beiug taken in the croquet competitions, and yesterday afternoon a number of the ladies were getting in some good practice in readiness for the trophy matches in which they are drawn to play, whilst others were playing bowls, and rolling them up with no small amount of cess, either. From a social point of view, a bowling club is of great value, as it brings the people into closer touch with each other.

In the competition for Mr Stiles’ trophy so far two games have been played, with the following results : —Barber, handicap 2, 25, beat Muuro, 5, 18, and Hopper 5, 21, beat Spring, scr., 15. For Mr Stunell’s trophy, Woods (scr.) beat Spring (scr.) The croquet competition has commenced, Mrs Petrie beating Mrs Edwards, and Mrs Greig won from Mrs George Barber.
