PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATE IN TROUBLE.

Christchurch, Nov. 23

John MacTachlau, of Ashburton, J.P., ex-M.P., and a candidate for Parliament, did not appear when his name was called in the Police Court this afternoon to answer a charge of drunkenness. The Magistrate (Mr Bishop) enquired if the offender was a Justice of the Peace. Sub-Inspector McGrath replied in the affirmative. His Worship commented on the uupropriety of a man yielding to drink when he might have to punish others tor a similar offence. The accused did not appear (having been released,), and was fined ros, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. Christchurch, Nov. 24.

At the Supreme Court this morning, Herbert Oscar Amos, storekeeper at Doyleston, sued John Mcffiacblau, ex-member for Parliament, for damages in respect of an alleged slander.

Plaintiff said defendant entered his store and abused him in the presence ot other people, calling him a thief aud a d d rogue. McLachlan, in evidence, admilieu having been annoyed with plaintiff. vV ami he entered the store he was irritated because he believed his signature was obtained to a guarantee bond improperly, defendant being the postmaster at Dovleston. The case is proceeding.
