SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary meeting of the local State School Committee was held last night. Present: Messrs Horublow (chairman), Henderson, Hunt, Hussey, Read and Alex. Speirs. Apologies were received !rom Messrs Betty and Coley. The sub-committee appointed to go into the question of levelling the playground, reported that the work should be done by day labour and carried out in sections, and protected until a solid bottom was gained. The report was adopted, and it was decided to start the work in the autumn.

It was decided to hold the question of sanitary tax over until replies were received Irom the Board and Borough Council. It was reported that it would be impossible to pay the charge out of capitation as the amount so received was not sufficient to meet ordinary expenses. The headmaster’s report disclosed that the average attendances for the past tour weeks were; 269-5. 293'5. 3°s' B . 3°4‘5- The average lor the whole period was 293-4 out °f au average roll number of 325. The roll number at present is 323. Certain repairs to windows and doors were set out. The school was inspected by Messrs Milne and Stewart ou November Bth and gth, but the report is not yet to hand. A school concert is being arranged to supplement the Committee’s lunds to take place at the break-ing-up. The Committee were asked to discuss the question of school prizes. The report was received and adopted. Mr Read was instructed to carry out the necessary repairs. The Committee thanked the teaching staff, through the headmaster, for their generous and voluntary effort to assist the Committee financially. Messrs Hunt and Speirs said the Committee was under a great obligation to the staff in this connection, because it meant a great deal of work and worry in training the scholars. Such concerts were of great educational value to the children. The Committee decided to heartily co-operate with the teachers, and details were left with the chairman and headmaster.

The question of prizes was discussed. It was decided to award attendance prizes and three other prizes in each class, details to be left with the headmaster and chairman.

It was decided to invite the chairman ol the Board to be present at the breaking-up ceremonies.

The headmaster reported that fire drill, according to instructions, had been carried out in the school, and the class rooms were emptied of every scholar in from half to three-quarters ot a minute. It was decided to procure another load of limestone for filling up holes in the path at the main entrance. —Same to be left in the hands ot Messrs Hunt and Husseu.

Accounts were passed for payment.

Messrs Heudersou and the chairman were appointed visitors for the month.

Other minor matters were discussed , and the meeting rose. '
