COASTAL SHIPPING DISPUTE.
pUEKN OF THK SOUTH LOADING FOR FOXTON.
Up to the present the coastal shipping dispute has not been sealed, but word was received in Foxton this morning that the pneen of the South was loading lor Foxton and is due at this port to-nionow morning. East week the Merchant Service Guild submitted certain proposals to the owners, the main point of which was the surrender of the overtime demand, but an allround increase in wages was insisted upon. This the Shipping Federation refused to accept, but made counter proposals which in their turn were refused by the Guild which asked that a further conference under the superinteudance of Mr Hally, the Conciliation Commissioner be held. This conference was held yesterday and what are considered very liberal terms were submitted by the owners but did not meet with the mates’ approval although the captains were unanimously in favour of same.
The position now is that the captains have decided, ou account of the untenable position taken up by the mates, and their disapproval of the non-acceptance of the compromise offered, to return to their ships.
Most of the vessels are now loading for their respective ports and the owners hope to find sufficient officers within the uext few days to fill the vacant positions.
