COASTAL SHIPPING DISPUTE.

DEADLOCK STILL CON TINUES.

The Shipowners' Federation met ua Thursday to receive new proposals submitted by the Merchant Service Guild tor the settlement of the dispute concerning the rale of pay ol coastal mates and their working conditions and payment tor overtime. The proposals suggested the "following rates ol pay ; —First male a mouth lor the Arapawa, Kahu, Kapuui, Kapiti, Manaroa, tjueeu of the South, Stormbird ; ,£l7 per mouth for first mates and ,£l4 tor second mates on the Alexauuer, Freeze, Blenheim, Gertie, Himatangi, Huia, Kiripaka, Kaitoa, Kairaki, Maria, Maugapapa, Moa, Nikau, Opawa, i’uliki, Fctoue, Rum, tipple, Storm, Waimea, Wakatu, and Waverley ; /,i6 per month tor hrst mates and for second mates on the Holmdale, Defender, and Kennedy. Uuly one mate iscairred on several ot the above-mentioned vessels, but provision is made in the new proposals for reduction in the lirst mates’ wages it a certified second mate is carried. A number of other conditions were also imposed. Captain McArthur, president of the Shipowners’ Federation, said the new proposals were unanimously rejected at the meeting yesterday.

The following leply was forwarded to Captain Watson, secretary of the guild ; "Dear Sir, —I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter ot rsl hist., enclosing amended and new demands from your guild. 1 am requested to reply that the shipowners cannot accept the amended demands submitted by you - —-Yours faithfully (Signed.) W. Pryor, secretary. Mr Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, is endeavouring to arrange with both parties, with a view to a settlement of the differences early next week. Wanganui, November 3. The officers’ strike is assuming another phase here. Steamers are arriving to-morrow officered by captains, and are alleged to have been loaded at Wellington by nonunionists. A meeting of waterside workers to-night is understood to have decided that it the Wellington union is in sympathy the local men will probably go out.
