DEBATING SOCIETY.

The was a fair attendance at the weekly meeting of the Literary and Debating Society held on. Tuesday night. Mr John Ross occupied the chair. The subject for debate was: “Is capital punishment . justifiable.’’ The affirmative was taken by Mr Claude Speirs, and -he was supported by Messrs Chrystall, R. N. Speirs, Furrie and Whibley. Dr Mandl was to have led the negative, but was unable lo attend on account of being called out. The Rev. Mr Aitken filled the vacancy, and Messrs Claris and Wilson also spoke in support of this side of the question. After a most interesting debate of about two hours, the meeting decided, by a majority of three, in favour of the affirmative.
