CHRISTCHURCH BY-ELECTION.
The Christchurch North byelection takes place to-day. The candidates are Mr Isitt, Independent Liberal, and Mr Hall, Independent Opposition. Both sides profess to be confident of the result, but public opinion rather favours the chances of the Independent Liberal, who has had all the best of the platform work, and has picked up a knowledge of politics quicker than his opponent has. Mr Isitt has shown himself even a more brilliant speaker than Mr Taylor was. He has refused to denounce the Government without having had an opportunity to test the evidence that has been produced by its critics. Mr Hall would vote with Mr Masssy or with anvone else to turn the Government out of office, but after that he would consult his own judgment in the choice of a leader.
