BEER AND LAND.

INCREASE THE TAXES !

“Double the tax ou beer,” advised Mr Massey when Mr Brown was speaking in the House of Representatives yesterday on the necessity for providing for a fund out of which adequate pensions could be paid to war veterans. “Yes,” retorted Mr Brown, instantly. ‘‘l will double the tax on beer if you will double the granduated tax ou land.” (Hear, hear, and laughter.) “I will do it to-morrow or this minute if necessary !” When Mr Massey laughed, Mr Brown declared that the Opposition leader often said he would “like things done,” but never went any further. “Why don’t you act instead of merely talking?” he asked. “I challenge you now ! I’ll propose a tax of double or treble on beer if you’ll do the same in regard to the graduated land tax to pay these men their pensions.” “That’s the way to talk to him,” said a member approvingly, amid general laughter, but the challenge was not taken up.
