FOOTBALL.

HOROWHENUA 24 v. MANAWATU 8.

Saturday was a glorious day for football, and there was a large number of spectators on the Showgrounds Palmerston North, to witness che return representative match, Manawatu v. Horowheuua. When these teams previously met this season Manawatu were victorious by 8 points to nil, so a very interesting and close game was expected. The display of rugby was very disappointing, but Horowheuua outclassed the home team in every department of the game.

Horowhenua kicked off with the sun at their backs and play hovered at half-way until Winiata got possession and started a passing rush when Jacob mulled, spoiling a chance of scoring. Another black passing rush was stopped by Codyre. Shortly afterwards Stalker took play to the visitor’s 25, where McKeweu obtained a mark, Hughes failed with the kick at goal. Harkness and Ward headed a rush to the black line but Ropata intervened in the nick of lime, a force resulting. From a scrum near the visitors’ line McKewen obtained possession and scored a try. Hughes easily converted. Manawatu ... 5 Horowheuua ... o The greens again attacked, but the defence of Rawiri, Winiata and Jacob held good until a penalty was awarded to the home team. The shot at goal tailed. Gobo, Reid, Wilson and George headed a rush to the green’s 25, where McKeweu saved. In midfield Neville got the ball out of the scrum and passed out to Martou, who passed to Jacob, and that player darted over the line and scored. Rawiri took the kick, which proved successful. Horowhenua ... 5 Manawatu ... 5 A little later Heta made a smart rush, and Marton picking up scored a splendid try under the posts. Rawiri again piloted the ball over the uprights. Horowhenua ... 10 Manawatu 5 Play continued to be of a fast character, and after some hard pressing on the part of the blacks’ Rawiri got over in the corner and scored. He took the shot at goal himself and failed to add the major points, Horowheuua ... 13 Manawatu ... 5 From a scrum Horowhenua were awarded a free kick, and Heta kicked a fine goal. Halltime then sounded the score being ; Horowheuua ... 16 Manawatu ... 5 On changing ends some fast play was shown by the home team. A pretty bout of passing by the greens ensued, which resulted in Codyre scoring. Hughes failed with the kick. Horowhenua ... 10 Manawatu ... 8 The greens renewed the attack, but failed to make any tangible impression, and Bob George transferred play to mid-field. A good run by Heta culminated in the home team being severely pressed, and ultimately Reid scored for the visitors. Rawiri converted. Horowheuua ... 21 Manawatu ... 8 Horowhenua were now having distinctly the better of the game, and Hopa got possession and beating his opponents scored. Rawiri failed to convert. Horowhenua ... 24 Manawatu ... 8

From the drop-out the ball travelled rapidly to the visitors’ 25. where Manawatu almost got over but Ropata saved. The remaining stages of the game were hotly contested, and when the whistle sounded no-side the score stood:

Horowhenua ... 24 Manawatu ... 8 Mr A. McMiun controlled the game.
