THE GAS WORKS.

COMMITTEE’S REPORT. At last night’s Council meeting the gas works committee reported as follows : “ Your committee beg to report that the new retorts aud weighbridge are now installed complete, and the retorts are being gradually dried off, and should be ready for use about the end of July. We recommend that G. Wincop be granted twelve days holiday without pay, and that the Council procure and sell at cost prices, and on easy time payments, gas cooking stoves of an approved pattern. We inspected the works on Friday last, and found everything in good order. The new engine was in use aud running very smoothly and well. The manager complains ot the delay of Messrs Barber and Co. in supplying belt aud pulley for same. We have also to recommend that the necessary rate for interest and sinking fund fot six months be struck.”
