MANAWATU (8) v. HOROWHENUA (0). This match was played at Levin on Saturday, before a large attendance. The ground was in good condition, but a high wind militated against good play. In fact the game was anything but a good exhibition of lootball, and at times it degenerated into a scramble. The back play ot King elicited much unfavourable comment, but the fact was that King was badly hurt in the initial stages of the game, and really should have retired. After the conclusion of the game he was medically attended. The teams lined up as follows HOROWHKNUA : King. Lewer, N. Wiuiata, Rawiri, M. Winiata, Rore, Pirimi, J. Hopa, Reed, Wilson, W. Wiuiata, Gobo, Reihana, Martin Ropata. MANAWATU : Hughes. Codyre, Stalker, Briscoe, Waldegrave, O’Connor, Ongley, M. Carroll, V. Carroll Arnold Baigent Harkness, Hicks, Grey, Treveua. Carrol kicked off for Manawatu against the wind, and with the sun in their faces, M. Winiata kicked well down the field, the ball going out near the Manawatu twenty-five. Some hot work took place in the visitors’ twenty-five, which Ongley relieved with a kick to half-way. Up to this stage Manawatu hookers got the best of the deal in the scrum. Stalker took a mark for Manawatu in their twenty-five, and shortly afterwards for M. Carrol being offside. N. Winiata took a shot at goal, which failed. The home team continued to press, and Hopa put in a good kick. At the twenty-five Martin took a freekick, which gave no advantage, and play coutinued in Manawatu territory. Off side against Martin gave a iree-Kick to Manawatu, and O’Connor Kicked out at the twenty-five. The visitors then, led by Carrol Bros., took play to the Horowhenua end, but off-side by one of the forwards spoiled the effort, and Martin kicked well down to the visitors’ line, where a scrum took place in front of the goal. Manawatu got the ball from the scrum. Ongley passed to Waldegrave, who booted to midfield, but off-side again spoiled the effort. Carrol took a good mark near midfield, and the ball went out at the half-way flag. A splendid dash by the Manawatu forwards took the ball right up to the Horowhenua end, where Hopa saved with a fine kick to touch, amid the applause of the spectators. Stalker’s love for the ball gave temporary relief to Horowhenua, Manawatu coming back to the attack. They continued to press, until Martin Winiata took a mark on the line, Walter Winiata, by the aid of the wind, finding the line at half-way. Again Manawatu came to the attack, and almost got over the line, but the ball was got away to mid-field, where Hopa was off-side, and O’Connor’s kick went out near the local twenty-five. Stalker’s love of the ball lost what looked like a certain try. The Manawatu hookers were getting the ball with monotonous regularity, but having the elements against them, their backs could not get going. Carrol headed a loose rush to the Horowhenua end, Pirimi just saving in the nick of time. From a scrum on the Black twenty-five, O’Connor had a shot at goal, which proved abortive. Play was taken to mid-field, Martin broke away on the half-way and streaked for the Green’s line. He kicked gently over the lull-back’s head but Stalker caught him up and kicked the ball dead. Play was taken to mid-field, where from a scrum Hopa got off-side and Hughes had a shot at goal from halfway. A free-kick to the Blacks for obstruction on the part ot Carrol, and the ball drifted to the Green end. A free-kick to Manawatu took play back to midfield, where Walter Winiata took a shot at goal, but Carrol charged the kick down. The local fullback saved nicely for Horowheuua, and sent the ball to Hughes, who found the line in mid-field. Lewer then broke away, and ran up to the Manawatu line, but he gave a forward pass to Nepia, and Manawatu forwards took play back to half-way. From a scrum Ongley passed to Waldegrave, who found the line near the Black's end, but a free-kick brought relief. This, however, was only of a temporary character, the visitors again coming to the attack. Play was subsequently delayed through Carrol being knocked out. Manawatu were now pressing severely, and almost got over the line, but another freekick for off-side staved off the attack for a short lime, and play was taken to mid-field. Halt-time then arrived, with the scores : Horowhenua - 0 Manawatu - - o On the resumption, Manawatu at once took up the attack, and experienced hard lines in not getting over. But Lewer saved at a critical moment, and dashing down the line, carried play into the visitor’s twenty-five. Hopa made a dash over the line but failed to grouud the ball, and Manawatu forced. The home team were now infusing a lot of dash into the game, and cheered on by their supporters, they made things hum lor Manawatu- Carrol started a rush, but Hopa
kicked uicely over his head into touch. The home team then made a splendid dash down field, and Lewer almost got over. From a scrum near the Manawatu twenty-five, Marton Wiuiata picked up and put in a fine run, passing to Roie to Rawiri, who in turn passed to Nepia, who just missed scoring. Horowhenua continued to play with great vigour, and at this stage pressed severely. Subsequently the ball went to the other end, where King mulled. Rawiri made a good rush down the field, but nothing culminated. Then Manawatu came with a rush, Carrol and Waldegrave at the head, and O’Connor got over the line and raced for the ball, but Lewer kicked dead. At this stage Marton Wiuiata was putting in a lot of good work for his side by getting m a lot of short kicks to touch. Carrol again led a rush and kicked over the line, but Rawiri forced down. At last Stalker scored a try, and Hughes kicked, the ball hitting the cross bar.
Manawatu - - 3 Horowhenua - o For off-side Hughes took a kick from half-way, but it proved ineffective. The ball was kicked over the Manawatu line, and Nepia touched down, but was offside, and Manawatu kicked to half-way. For off-side Hughes had another shot at half-way, but the oval failed to find the uprights. Play travelled from end to end, Hopa being conspicuous with some fine dashes for Horowhenua, the ball eventually finding the line, through Ongley, in the Horowhenua twenty-five, play was now fast and furious, Manawatu going near scoring several times. Once O’Connor raced over the line, but the ball went out of touch in goal. Eventually Stalker got over the line, and scored a try, and taking the kick he fructified his initial success. This was all the scoring, and the result was:
