BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber last night. Present: —His Worship the Mayor (G. H. Stiles, Esq.), and Crs Dr Adams, Carter, Chrystall, Coley, Greig, Speirs, and Stewart. It was decided on the motion of Cr Coley, seconded by Cr Stewart, that in pursuance and exercise of the powers vested in it in that behalf by the Municipal Corporations Act 1908, the Libraries and Mechanics Institute Act 1908 and the Rating Act 1908 and all amendments thereto, the Foxton Borough Council hereby makes and levies a general rate of 3d in the £, a library rate of i-Bth of a penny in the £ and the following special rates : Gas loan rate of i}(d, streets loans rate of :/sih of a penny, Whirokino Bridge rate of )£th of a penny, and Shannon Bridge rate of i/i6th of a penny in the £ on the unimproved value as shown on the valuation roll of all rateable properties in the Borough of Foxton, also a sanitation charge of 17s per pan on all house properties within the night-soil area.
The Mayor mentioned that the Library and Whirokino Bridge rates had been reduced from x/6th of a penny to i/Bth of a penny in the £ and that the gas rate would be struck for the half year only. Messrs Thomas Horton, Ltd., wrote offering to give the Council trees for street planting to the value of £5, and to send a man to plant same, charging only bare expenses and time. —It was decided on the motion ot Cr. Adams, seconded by Cr. Carter, that Horton’s offer be accepted and that the varieties be chestnut and English silver birch. It was decided to write to Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., expressing the Council’s thanks for their handsome donation to the Coronation Town Hall fund. Mr C. F. Johnston wrote asking that his lease of Cemetery Reserve be transferred to George Reay. — Transfer agreed to. In his report, the Inspector of Nuisances stated that complaint had been made to him that the trees on the church property, Avenue Road, were the means ol keeping the road in a muddy state and also kept the sun off the properties on the opposite side of the road. —It was decided on the motion of Cr Stewart, seconded by Cr Coley that the owners of properties in the Avenue having trees overhanging or overshadowing the road be requested to have same removed or trimmed to the satisfaction ot the Council. Accounts amounting to £795 is id were passed tor payment. The Council went into committee to deal with matters in connection with the Coronation Hall and it was subsequently decided that a special meeting be held on Monday evening next to discuss the question of seating accommodation and lighting and also to deal with matters in connection with the gas works. Three quotations for painting the scenery for the Coronation Hall were received and it was decided that a sub-committee consisting of the Mayor, Crs Adams and tipeirs be appointed to deal with same.
