WELLINGTON TRAM FATALITY.

WELL-KNOWN CITIZEN RUN OVER. Mr Duncan McMurrich, superintending engineer of the Union Steam Ship Company at Wellington, met with his death shortly after S o’clock last evening, as the result of a tram accident. Mr McMurrich and his wife were crossing the road opposite Jenkins and Mack’s premises, at the lower end of Featherston street, in the vicinity of the Exhibition buildings, Wellington, just as a car was approaching. The motorman rang the bell, .both Mr and Mrs McMurrich hesitating what to do. Mr McMurrich, however, decided to attempt the crossing of the line before the car passed, assisting his wife in doing so. The latter stopped short, but her husband had already got on to the line, and the car flashed past, knocking him over. The emergency brake was immediately applied, but it was too late. Mr McMurrich was removed from under the car, and medical aid summoned. On examination it was found that deceased’s skull had been fractured, and that death was instantaneous. The body was removed to the deceased's late residence, Ohiro road. An inquiry is being held to-day. Mr McMurrich was widely known throughout the Dominion, and a large circle of acquaintances will sincerely regret to hear of his tragic end. He leaves a widow, five sons, and one daughter.
