THE KING’S BIRTHDAY.
As there appears to be some misapprehension in regard to the observance of the King’s Birthday, the following information is supplied by the Inspector of Factories for the benefit of our readers : Shops are not compelled to close on King’s Birthday. Under section 19 of the Act of 1908 it is provided that, it any shopkeeper wishes to do so, he may observe his usual weekly half-holiday on King’s Birthday (Saturday next) instead of Wednesday afternoon next. If the shops decide to close on the Saturday they need not close to-morrow afternoon at one o’clock, but must close at 6 o’clock on Friday as usual. Under the Factories Act all females and all boys under iS must be given the Sovereign’s Birthday, so that these people cannot be employed at all on Saturday next. With regard to awards and industrial agreements, the provisions of any awards or industrial agreements relating to the Sovereign’s birthday must be complied with by all employers who are paities to the same.
