SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

Die ordinary meeting ot the loeal State School Committee was held on Thursday night. Present: Messrs Hornblovv (chairman), Betty (secretary), Henderson, C. Hunt, Hussey, Procter and Read. Correspondence was read from the .Education Board re the appointment of Miss Smith as third assistant ; also enclosing qualifications and testimonials. —It was unanimously decided to approve ot the appointment. Miss Smith is to take up her duties on the ist prox. A communication was read from the Board re celebrating Empire Day and setting forth the programme, which includes : assembly, national anthem, saluting the flag, addresses touching the Coronation of King George, Imperial Conference, Imperial delence, defence of our country, resources, history, and development of our own country, and also the place presently to be filled by the children now filling our schools ; patriotic songs, readings and recitations ; lessons from history ; lessons on the geography of the Empire ; lessons on civics.—lt was decided that the chairman and secretary act in conjunction with the head teacher in carrying out the programme.

A letter was read from Mr McKnight, complaining that the trees had not been trimmed according to specifications and certain fencing stipulated had not been done by the contractor. —It was decided to refer the matter to Mr G. Coley, who was authorised to supervise the work. The matter of procuring limestone for filling at the gate and in front of the school, was left in the hands of the chairman.

The headmaster’s report slated the average attendances for the past four weeks were 3017, 303'!, 308‘5. The average lor the whole period was out of an average roll number of 322. The lowest attendance was 268 and the highest 316. The report also referred to one or two minor matters, which were attended to. Messrs Henderson and Hunt were appointed visitors for the month, and it was decided that in future visitors’ reports should be submitted in writing. Accounts were read and held over for further consideration.
