MANAWATU HUNT CLUB.

meet at herrington. Despite the short notice and the fact that it was not a halfholiday, a large number of people witnessed the first meet of the Manawatu hounds at Herrington yesterday. The weather was ideal for hunting. The drag was laid by Messrs J. L. and A. Buick and started in the section near the Presbyterian manse, thence round the back of Herrington homestead, across the road on the Lady’s Mile, through the p <1 > paddock, finishing near tae wool shed. The hounds under the able supervision of Mr J. Sweeney, are getting into good form, and led the huntsmen along at a merry pace. The obstacles were comparatively easy in order to encourage young and prospective huntsmen. Among those who followed were the following :—J. Sweeney (huntsman), Consul ; J. Donaldson (acting master), Lulu; R. McKenzie, Lucky Boy ; D. Tennant, Rangeatea ; J. Hehir, Himataugi; A Pee, Herrington ; J. L. Buick, Volley; A. Buick, Lehora ; T. Buick, Plying Cloud ; F, Robinson, Monte Cristo ; C. O’Neil, Camaros ; D. Purcell, Foxton. After the run, the huntsmen and visitors were entertained right royally by Messrs Robinson Bros. Mr Donaldson, on behalf of the Club, eulogised Messrs Robinson Bros, splendid hospitality and sportsmanship in placing their property at the disposal of the Club, and referred to their untiring efforts in endeavouring to make the initial run a success. Three ringing cheers were given for the property owners. Mr Donaldson said that it was apparent that the day selected was unsuitable, but the next run, which would lake place inside a month, would be held on a Wednesday. It was the Club’s intention to elect a local committee and appoint a local deputy master. The keen air sharpened the appetites of those present, and ample justice was done to the excellent “spread” presided over by Mr M. Perreau. The hounds will be at Levin today and Manakau on Monday. The next hunt at Himatangi will be held on June 7th.
