DROWNING FATALITY.
The opening of the shooting season yesterday was marked by a distressing accident on Take Wairarapa, resulting in the loss of two lives. A party of four —Mr G. Pepperill, aged sixty, his son, a nephew, and a friend went out in a small boat to shoot ducks. The weight of the four men, with their guns, ammunition, etc., proved too much for the frail craft, which sank near the mouth of the Tauherenikau river.
The elder Pepperill and one other man —whether the nephew or the friend, neither ot whose names is available, was not known last evening—were drowned. The only thing certain is that the younger Pepperill is one of those saved.
Mr Eawrie Donald, of Featherston, who was shooting near the spot, went to the rescue on seeing the boat party in difficulties, and saved the two men.
Mr G, Pepperill leaves a widow, who is an invalid, and a large family in Featherston.
