HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
BULB SHOW TO BE HELD
A well-attended meeting of the above was held iu the Council Chambers on Tuesday night. The president (Mr Alex. Speirs) presided. An apology tor absence was received from the secretary. Correspondence was read from Veitch and Allan, enclosing a donation of half-a-guinea to the prize fund list, which was acknowledged with thanks.
The Chairman said the business before the meeting was to decide whether a Bulb Show should be held in lieu of the Autumn Show, which had to be abandoned this year owing to the destruction of the Public Hall. A Bulb Show had been discussed at a previous meeting, but no motion had been taken on the subject. When members paid their subscriptions they were under the impression that the fee entitled them to a spring and autumn show. If it were decided to hold a Bulb Show it would keep faith with members in this respect. The Chairman added that the Masonic Hall would provide ample accommodation for a Bulb Show with the addition of a marquee. He also pointed out that the financial year'ended on the 18th of May.
A general discussion ensued, in which it was stated that if a Bulb Show were held it would mean that three shows would be held next year, which would recompense members for the loss of the Autumn Show. There was a consensus of opinion that a Bulb Show would be a success, as the soil in this district was specially adapted for the production of such blooms. A difficulty that presented itself was the correct classification of the blooms by growers. In reply to a question the Chairman stated that the Coronation Hall should be completed about the end of August or beginning of September, and if a Bulb Show was decided upon it would be held some time in the latter month.
A discussion took place as to whether other blooms should be included besides bulbs. One member pointed out that the exhibits should not be allowed to clash with the Spring Show catalogue. On the motion of the Chairman seconded by Miss Ross, it was decided to hold a Bulb Show, the catalogue to include any other flowers in bloom.
The following committee were appointed to draw up catalogues for the Bulb Show and also the Spring Show, the catalogues to be submitted for approval to the general meeting on the xßth May: —Mesdames Boyes, Greig, Galland, Miss Ross and Messrs Galland and P. G. Jackson. Other details were left to a future meeting. The Chairman stated that the Society’s credit balance was £42. Other minor matters were discussed and the meeting rose.
