THE PLAGUE AT AUCKLAND.
A NURSE ATTACKED.
Auckland, April 6,
One of the nurses who was in attendance on the case of pneumonic plague which terminated fatally six days ago to-day developed symptoms of the disease. She became ill very soon after the patient died, and was at once isolated, but it was not until today that her illness was diagnosed as plague.
Auckland, East Night
Nurse Carroll was one of the first nurses to volunteer for service when the present plague outbreak occurred. She rallied somewhat to-day, and on inquiry at the hospital this evening it was ascertained that, though her condition was still regarded as critical, there was some slight improvement. Nurse Carroll has not been long in Auckland and comes from Queensland, her relations residing at Rockhampton. [Nurse Carroll was for a short time resident in Foxton and assisted Nurse Small. — Ed. H.] CEEANSING OF THE TOWN. Auckland, April 7. The City Council last night received lengthy reports from the medical officers and city engineer on the sanitary conditions of the town. As the present Council’s term is almost expired it was left to the Mayor, acting with the health officer and Harbour Board to appoint a good staff of men to attend generally to the cleansing of the town. It is not proposed to take any action likely to cause a panic, but it is recognised that such a staff must be kept continually employed until all risk of further infection disappears. THE JAVAOUTBREAK. Sydney, April 7. The manager of the Dutch Steamship Company has received official confirmation of the existence of plague in Java, but only in the Malang district. There is none on the Coast, and it is not of a violent character, being confined to natives. All precautions were taken for the islolatiou of infected areas. On April 2, thirteen cases were reported, whereof seven were fatal.
