THE GAS WORKS.

JANUARY RKPORT. At last night’s Council meeting the Town Clerk reported as under on the working of the gasworks for January : '‘Duriug the month of January 245,500 ft of gas was manufactured, being at the rate of 8,183 ft per day, 242 gallons of tar and 12 tons of coke were also made. The coal used amounted to 22 tons, 170,500 It of gas was sold to consumers. The payments for the month amounted to ,£142 7s 3d, made up of labour ,£44 19s, coal, wharfage aud cartage 10s 2d and goods, fittings, etc., ,£46 iHs 3d. The receipts were payment for gas and goods ids 7d and there is still outstanding 4s 6d, making a total of xj’ns 18s id, thus leaving a debit on the month’s working of £26 19s 4d. If interest, 11s Sd, is added to this amount the month’s working will show a loss of ns. Payments have been made from the Capital Account of 3s 6d, to which must be added for new engine, thus leaving only ,£458 13s 4b for the new bench of retorts aud further extension of works.” —It was pointed out that included in the expenditure for the month was a quantity of goods aud fittings and also the cost of sinking a well, purchase of pumps, etc. On the actual working the works were eveu now practically paying their way. Thestate of affairs was considered very satisfactory.
