CANADIAN MAIL CONTRACT.
SECURED BY UNION COMPANY. Mklhournk, January 15. Mr Fisher, Prime Minister, has received a cable message from the Canadian Government regarding the Vancouver mail service question. Regret is expressed that the Commonwealth declines to permit a New Zealand port of call to be included in the new contract that has been under consideration, and the Canadian Government states that it has therefore decided to enter into a contract with Sir James Mills, managing director of the Union Steam Ship Company, for a term of five years for a service between Canada and New Zealand. Referring to the communications that have been passing, Mr Fisher says the Canadian Government has put the matter in an aggressive way. “What we said was that we could not agree to the proposal because it means subsidising a line belonging to another country.”
