WOMENS CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION.

A successful meeting was held on Thursday afternoon, in the Masonic Hall, under the auspices of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. The chair was taken by the Mayoress (Mrs Stiles). The meeting was opened with singing, and prayer was offered by Sister Moody-Bcll. Mrs Stiles, in a few well-chosen words, explained the object of the meeting, and then called on Mrs Mowlem, the president of the Palmerston N. Union, who gave a very interesting Bible study ou temperance. She also showed how women can cultivate and teach moderation in all things ; thus being the right hand in the home as well as to the world, and still maintain her womanliness. Mrs Mowlem went on to show the many branches ot work taken up by this world-wide White Ribbon movement. The initial letters, W.C.T.U., stands for “ we come to uplift,” Every department of this work is making progress. She said the course is right, and must prevail. An earnest appeal was then made that the work in Foxlou may not be forgotten. Sister Moody-Bell then spoke a few words, after which an invitation was given to join the great army of white ribbon crusaders. Quite a goodly number showed their willingness to join and form a branch in Foxtou. The initiatory service of the local branch of the W.C.T.U. was then held, and after a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Mowlem, and to Mrs Stiles for presiding, the meeting closed with the temperance doxology. The following were the officers elected for the Foxtou branch for the ensuing year :—President, Mrs Stiles; vice-presidents, Mesdaraes Aitken and Mairs ; secretary, Mrs Swaunel; treasurer, Mrs F. Woods.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, December 12th, at 3 p.m.
