MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
The annual meeting of the above was held on Wednesday last. Present: Conn cillors J. G. Wilson. T. Masters, J. Hanson 1 W. E. Barber, G. Kendall and H. H. Hunt. Ou the motion of Cr Masters, seconded by Cr Kendall, Mr J. G. Wilson was re-elected chairman. Highly eulogistic references were made to the services and capabilities of Mr Wilson. Councillors, in supporting Mr Wilson’s re-election, agreed that they possessed the best chairmau iu the Dominion. Cr Henson went one better by stating they had the best chairman, the best couuty, and the best riding in the Dominion —he represented Waitohi riding. Cr R. B. McKenzie was granted leave of absence. He wrote, expressing his desire to see the chairmau re-elected, and paid a special tribute to the work done by the clerk and staff.
Correspondence was read as follows :
From Moutoa Drainage Board, asking that the Council’s engineer inspect four bridges now completed over a drain under construction. —Engineer instructed to do so.
From Foxton Borough Council, offering to send delegates to a meeting in connection with extension of the tramway to Greatford or Martou. A letter from the Marton Chamber of Commerce stated that Messrs C. B. Collins (president) and F. Purnell (secretary) had been appointed to attend the conference. —Received. From K. L. Bethune, asking for repairs to the road iu front of his shop at Oroua Downs. —Engineer to attend to it. Tenders are to be invited for the supply of 800 dog collars. A meeting of the Council will be held ou sth December to pass accounts and receive tenders. It was decided to hold the regular meetings of the Council on the second Monday in each month, instead of Wednesday. The registrar of dogs was authorised to take legal proceedings against persons who have failed to register their dogs for 1910.
The Overseer reported as under; —Awahou Riding. The usual repairs have been carried out in the shape of trimming in ruts on the Kari Kari and Elkins’ Motuiti roads. Metal has been carted and holes repaired on the FoxtonShannon road. About 18 chains of the Shannon road has been formed up with the grader, and should be metalled. Tenders should be called for the above work as soon as possible, in order to have the work done before winter. There is a strip of land reserved for road opposite the Himatangi Run, which is very much covered with gorse, and which the roadman is prepared to lease from the Council for the clearing of gorse, provided the Council will provide the fencing material. Whirokino Sub-division. —The traffice is cutting up the hill we graded last summer on No. 2 line to such an extent that the clay put on the road is disappearing, and I would recommend the Council to metal 14 chains. Cost of work, Dealing with the Overseer’s report it, was decided to call tenders for metalling 18 chains of FoxtonShannon road ; to metal 14 chains on hill on No. 2 line in Whirokino riding ; and to apply to Railway Department for 200yds of metal to repair Palmerston • Foxtou road between Oroua Bridge and Bainesse siding. The Tramway Manager reported that the credit balance for October, including cost of erecting coal bunker, was ,£33 ns fid. Traffic was satisfactory, the principal items being coal 26 tons, manure 98 tons, merchandise 145 tons, flax 39 trucks, timber 75,200 ft. The new timetable came into force on jth Inst., and will effect a saving in truck hire. The tram engine have been inspected, and necessary repairs are being carried out. The receipts totalled ,£179 7s and expenses 15s fid.
