PRESENTATION TO THE MAYOR.

silver cradle presented BY COUNCILLORS. A very pleasing little ceremony took place at the conclusion of the general business at last night’s Council meeting, when, in accordance with the time-honoured custom, Cr Speirs, on behalf of the members of the Foxton Borough Council, presented his Worship the Mayor (G. H. Stiles, Esq.) with a silver cradle, to commemorate the birth of a daughter during his term of office as Chief Magistrate of the Borough of Foxton. In making the presentation, Cr Speirs referred to the old custom of presenting the silver cradle, and expressed the pleasure that he and his fellow-councillors felt at being in the position of doing the Mayor the honour of making the presentation. He considered it was a great honour to occupy the position that the Mayor did that night. He asked the Mayor to accept the gift with the Councillors’ best wishes. Cr Stewart also spoke in similar terms. He stated that when the matter was mooted there was absolute unanimity on the part of the Councillors. The Mayor, in accepting the cradle, said there were times when it was difficult for one to adequately express their feelings, and the present was one. He greatly appreciated the kindly remarks that had been made, and could not express the pleasure he felt in accepting the gift. The presenting of a silver cradle in similar circumstances was an old custom. During his term as Councillor there had been two similar presentations, one to Mr G. A. Simpson and the other to Mr B. G. Gower, both of which he had taken part in. At that time he did not for a moment think he would ever be in a similar position. In after years he would look back with pleasure on the good times he had spent at the Council table. Although they occasionally had some small differences at times, taken all through they were a very happy family. He concluded by again thanking the Councillors for the handsome cradle. On resuming his seat the Mayor was loudly applauded.
