FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. Present: —His Worship the Mayor (G. H. Stiles Esq.) and Crs Dr Adams, Gibbs, Rimmer, Coley, Stewart, Speirs, Levett, aud Robinson. Correspondence was read as follows; — From Mr W. H. ColHugwood, trustee of the Palmerston North Fire Brigade Library, offering books for sale at is each—lt was decided on the motion of the Mayor seconded by Cr Coley, that the Town Clerk have authority to purchase up to 200 books if suitable and in good order. From the Napier Chamber of Commerce asking the Council to lend its support to a water power scheme from Waikareraoana. — Decided on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Coley, that this Council favour the application to have Waikaremoana used for electric supply and that a letter be forwarded to the Department to this effect. From the New Zealand Shipping Co., Ltd., agreeing to contribute ,£25, as suggested by the Council, towards the cost of metalling road in front of their dumping sheds and asking that the work be put in hand as early as possible. — Decided that the New Zealand Shipping Co. be informed that the Council is prepared to do the road in front of store now that the Company is willing to contribute towards cost of same, but it would be inadvisable to do the work until autumn, when the road would be ready for winter and would set, and solidify during the wet weather whereas if done now a great deal of metal would bury aud get wasted. From the Chief Health Officer, in reply ’to a letter from the Council, agreeing to the public health inspection scheme laid down, forwarding form of consent to be filled in and returned. —Cr Speirs said at the last meeting of the Hospital Board it had been stated that Foxton was the only place that had approved of the scheme. Other boroughs in the neighbourhood were opposed to it, and bad appointed delegates to attend a meeting to discuss same. The speaker said that it had been mentioned at the meeting that it was simply a scheme got up to throw more expense in connection with sanitary inspection on to the boroughs, and thus relieve the Government. The letter was allowed to lie on the table.
Cr Coley presented a petition signed by seven ratepayers, asking that a poll of the ratepayers be taken with a view to reverting to rating on the capital value. —In accordance with the standing orders, it was allowed to lie on the table until next meeting.
The poundkeeper reported that during last mouth lour head of cattle aud 50 horses had been impounded, aud driving fees amounting to ,£1 5s had been collected. Accounts amounting to ,£553 6s Sd were passed for payment. The special order striking the rate in connection with the purchase of the gasworks was confirmed.
It was decided on the motion of Cr Coley, seconded by Cr Ritnmer, that half the rates of an indigent ratepayer, who has been confined to her bed for mouths past, be remitted for this year only, aud that she be recommended to sell the property or make full provision for the rates in future. It was decided on the motion of Cr Levett, seconded by Cr Gibbs, that the New Zealand Herald, Lyttelton Times, aud Dominion be added to the list of newspapers in the library reading roomThe Council rose at 9.30 p.m.
