FOOTBALL.
The selectors, Messrs Dr. Adams, P, T. Robinson and Wanklyn, have chosen the following team to represent Foxton against Horowheuua at Levin on Saturday next; —■ Full - back, Osboldstone (Albion) ; threequarters, Furrie, L. Perewhiti, K. Perewhiti, (Albion); five-eights, Rori, Redgrave (Awahou) ; half, Broughton (Awahou) ; wing, Reihana (Awahou) ; forwards, Joe, Hooker, Reid, Beaton (Awahou), A, Cook, Bowe (Albion), S. Burgess (Rongotea). Emer., Back, W. Cook (Albion) ; forwards, Royal (Albion), Millar (Awahou). The drag will leave the Post Office at 12.30 o’clock. Any player unable to make the trip is requested to immediately advise the secretary.
The team selected is a fairly strong one, but could be improved upon. It is understood that Dunn (three-quarter) was not considered as he was away from Foxton at the time, otherwise he must have received a place in the team. The back division could have been strengthened by putting Cook full-back and bringing Osboldstone up to half. Cook is undoubtedly the safest full in the sub-union, and as a half-back Osboldstone is certainly better than Broughton. The reason why
the two Perewhitis have been picked for the three-quarter line instead of as five-eighths, the places they have played in all the season, appears to be known only to the selectors themselves. It would certainly strengthen the team if these two players changed places with Rori and Redgrave. One of the players most conspicuous on account of his absence from the team is Albion’s wing forward, Royal. He was looked upon by the
majority of the followers of the game in Foxton as a certainty for the position of “ rep. winger,” as he has been showing great form this season. He could well have replaced Reihana, who should have gone into the pack. Of the other forwards selected, Joe might be termed a has been,” and could have made way for a younger player. Beaton and Cook have earned their places. Bowe plays a very strenuous game, and Hooker’s weight will be a
great help in the scrum work The other forward, Burgess’
knowledge of the game is rather
limited, but this delect is counterr balanced by his willingness for “ solid graft.” Why Winiata was not considered is not quite clear, as it is understood that he has not yet got his clearance from the Albion Club, and was therefore
eligible to play lor the "reps.” His inclusion in the team would have greatly strengthened the forward division. However, the team has now been finally picked,
and it is hoped they will put up a good fight on Saturday. In order to give the local reps.
a practice together, a game has beeu arranged to be played on the racecourse to-morrow afternoon, when the following team will “ try out ” the selected team : —W. Cook, Dunn, Matthews, Frankland, P. T. Robinson, Hukiki, • Royal, F. • Robinson, Curtis, Martin, Haeana, Smith, W. Coley, Puti and F. Hooker. The game will commence at 3 o’clock. Football locally was “off” on Saturday on account of Manawatu failing to put in an appearance.
