MONTHLY MEETING

Wanganui, This Day

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was held last night. Present; — Messrs Pirani (chairman), Aldridge, Bennett, Dixon, Fraser, Guthrie, M.P., O’Dea, Purnell and Spurdle. Resignations : —J. R. Rutherford, Wanganui D.H.S.; F. Clapham, Aratika; F. M. Darcy, Otairi; V. M. Wilson, Taihape ; M. Lynch, Makawahai; M. T. Ballard, Gonville.

Appointments : H. Harre, Horipito ; L. Jenks, Taoroa; R. Beere, Moutoa. Leave of absence was granted to: J. Stagpoole, Stoney Creek ; W. E. McHardie, Waverly; G. D. Mackay, Rangataua ; T. Long, Feildiug D.H.S.; H. E. Astbury, Kimbolton ; E. J. Aitken, Pueroa.

Mr F. Pirani was re-elected chairman for the ensuing year, all members speaking in complimentary terms of his ability, energy, and knowledge of educational matters.

The Mayor and several of the Councillors of the borough of Wanganui waited on the Board as a deputation to ask that the sections on the corner of the Avenue and Guyton street, which the Board are about to lease, should have 15ft deducted on each side for street widening purposes, and agreed to make good any loss in price.—The Board decided to call for alternate tenders in order to ascertain the difference in price, and the deputation thanked the Board and withdrew.

The plans for an Assembly Hall to be built at the Girls’ College were approved, and tenders for its erection are to close in time for the next Board meeting, on August 15th. It was decided that Mr Swanger should act as secretary to the Conference of Education Boards, to be held in Wellington at the end of the present mouth. Accounts amounting to ,£249 13s 2d were passed tor payment, and the Board adjourned till Monday, August 15th.
