JUVENILE BALL.

The juvenile ball organised with a view to provide a good time for the children and secondly to raise funds for the State school library, took place last night in the Public Hall. The attendance of little ones was very disappointing but the adults counter-balanced this deficiency a good dance with supper thrown in for the modest sum of one shilling does not present itself very often, and adult trippers of the light fantastic were prepared to possess their souls in patience until the little ones had had their fling. The hall was nicely decorated and the floor had been specially prepared for the dance. The fancy costumes of the little ones as they flitted hither and thither presented a very pleasing sight. Mrs Nye’s prize for the most attractive costume by a girl was won by Lily Rand, charmingly attired as a fairy, Willie Signal succeeded in winning Mrs Reeve’s prize for the best lancy costume for boys. He was cleverly made up to represent Father Christmas,

The following children appeared in fancy costume : —Dolly Spiers, flower girl; Mary Collins, nurse ; Winnie Procter, jonquil; Violet Nye, Gretchen ; Lucy Flavell, Gretchen ;J Edna Collins, violet; Florence Desmond, Japanese; Sonny Robinson, Oddfellow; Ernest Haslett, clown, Arthur Baker, Jack Tar ; Douglas Walls, footballer ; Keith Eambess, cadet; Willie King, jockey ; Clarence Walls, Manawatu Herald ; Myrtle Effelbein, Colleen Bawn ; Bertha Gower, cupid ; Maty Ann Slattery, school girl; Rita Perreau, Irish washerwoman ; Elsie King, Scotch lassie ; Gladys Walls, butterfly ; Alex. Gray, jockey ; C. Stunnell, cadet; Jack Kennedy, sailor ; Hugh Walls, sailor ; Mavis Dunn, fairy ; Grace Reeve, Spanish dancer ; Hilda Barber, witch ; Elsie Symons, witch ; Marion Eevett, blue bell; Mary Robinson, gipsy ; Stanley Collins, sailor boy; Eileen Ennis, fairy ; Reg. Barber, commercial traveller ; Garnet . Fraser, comraerical traveller; Ken Furrie, clown. The last named caused a great deal of laughter by the way he romped and played with the children, greatly amusing them. There were a number of others not in fancy dress, Messrs A. and J. Duun officiated as M’s.C. in a very efficient manner. Excellent music was supplied by Mrs Malcolm of Palmerston North. A very pretty feature of the evening was the Grand March Polka and the manner in which the little ones executed it was very pleasing. Before the children quitted the floor the M’s.C. called on them to give three cheers for Mrs Nye and her committee which were were heartily given. There was an abundance of refreshments for old and young. Mrs Nye who undertook the arduous secretarial duties and Mrs Collins, treasurer, and their energetic committee are to be congratulated upon the success of the function. About nine sets of adults took the floor and spent a merry time after the children had finished.
